Kennel Assistant

Our kennel assistant position is an excellent opportunity for anyone with an interest in the veterinary field who is looking to get their foot in the door and some hands-on experience. The hours for this position are ideal for students or anyone with a passion for animal care and availability on afternoons, weekends, and holidays. The primary responsibility of our kennel assistants is to act as the caretakers of pets that board at our clinic, including (but not limited to):

  • Feeding, walking, and medicating patients while boarding
  • Monitoring food/water consumption and urinary/bowel movements for boarding patients
  • Cleaning the kennels/runs of patients during and after their stay with us

Our kennel assistants are not only a crucial element with regards to ensuring top-notch care for boarding pets, but also play a key role in the behind-the-scenes daily tasks involved with keeping the clinic operating smoothly and efficiently. Other responsibilities include:

  • Cleaning food and water bowls
  • Operating the laundry machines and providing clean, comfortable bedding for patients
  • Stocking items throughout the clinic

Veterinary Assistant

As a veterinary assistant, you have a unique role within the practice that involves interaction with patients, clients, and staff alike. While all positions at the practice includes interaction with our human and non-human guests, the veterinary assistants have the opportunity to work in close proximity to our clients and patients as they assist the doctors in the examination rooms. The primary function of our assistants is to be the right-hand man (or woman) to our doctors in assisting with appointments and procedures. Every day is different with this position, and there is never a dull moment!

The daily duties may include a wide variety of tasks, including (but not limited to):

  • Restraining and comforting patients during appointments and procedures
  • Assisting the doctors and staff with preparing items for the laboratory
  • Bathing patients who need a spa day!
  • Cleaning, stocking, and preparing items used each day
  • Drawing vaccines up into syringes
  • Attending to all pets boarding at our clinic (includes walking, feeding, and medicating these pets, particularly on Monday-Friday mornings while our kennel assistants are not in the office)
  • Helping the doctors manage their time and schedule effectively

Veterinary Receptionist

When you think of a “receptionist”, you may think of a person who answers phones, schedules appointments, checks-in patients, and collects payments, but our reception staff does so much more! As the first person our clients see when they come in and the last person they interact with before they leave, the receptionists are a critical part of ensuring the clients and patients enjoy a pleasant visit with us. Therefore, strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with a pleasant and compassionate demeanor, are a must! Additionally, it’s important that our receptionists work well in a fast-paced environment, all while keeping their cool. Other skills, such as attention to detail, an eye for organization and proficiency, and a knack for articulation are all keys to success in this position. Dr. Dinges often refers to our receptionists as the “traffic cops” of the clinic: they are responsible for ensuring that the day flows smoothly and that clients and patients are cared-for in a timely manner.

Additional duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Greeting clients and patients as they arrive at the clinic
  • Scheduling appointments according to the needs of the client and the urgency of the situation
  • Answering a multi-line phone system
  • Handling monetary transactions
  • Transporting pets to/from the client to the treatment area/grooming room/etc. as needed
  • Attending to a wide array of clients and patients with respect and kindness
  • Recalling and relaying detailed information on a day-to-day basis
  • Directing “traffic” (whether in-person, over the phone, or online – in other words, determining the urgency and order in which to address concerns and requests)

Veterinary Technician

While the position is officially labeled as a “veterinary technician”, the term “veterinary nurse” may be more appropriate. Our technicians are responsible for a wide array of tasks, including overseeing the care of our patients as well as acting as a liaison between our doctors and clients. The success of this position relies heavily on the technician’s communication skills: their ability to accurately and concisely relay pertinent information between the veterinarian and pet parent is crucial. Furthermore, the unique ability to maintain a sense of urgency while also calmly assessing and addressing concerns of clients and doctors is a fundamental component of this position. In addition to being communication and comfort experts, our technicians are also master multitaskers! The technicians who find the greatest success in our practice have honed the skills necessary to balance the needs of the clients, patients, and doctors, all while performing the daily duties required of the position.

Our RVTs (Registered Veterinary Technicians) have undergone lengthy training and education prior to employment at our clinic. Not only have they completed the programs/coursework required to obtain their Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology/Applied Science, they also must pass the rigorous VTNE (Veterinary Technician National Exam) before they are eligible to have the title of RVT.

Additionally, they must continue to further their education in the field by attending approved lectures on topics related to veterinary medicine on an annual basis. While some RVTs have pursued supplementary education in a specific field of veterinary medicine (such as dentistry, for example), all are required to have completed the degree program at an accredited university/college and continue to further their education/expertise. This position requires a large commitment, even prior to employment. Our technicians are an extremely valuable part of our team, and all exhibit a passion for veterinary medicine and the patients they work extremely hard to help on a daily basis.

A brief list of a technician’s daily responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Caring for hospitalized patients and ensuring a comfortable recovery
  • Communicating information to doctors, staff, and clients
  • Filling prescriptions and relaying instructions to the pet parents
  • Preparing patients for surgery and procedures (including placing IV catheters, drawing blood, etc.)
  • Closely monitoring anesthesia and patients during surgical procedures
  • Sterilizing and preparing instruments for use in surgery and/or examinations
  • Performing cold laser therapy according to the instructions of the doctor
  • Monitoring patients under our care for anything that might be of concern (and alerting a doctor if needed)
  • Helping triage patients and assessing urgency of pets requiring immediate care
  • Collecting and recording pertinent vital signs when necessary
  • Discussing pre/post-surgical instructions with clients
  • Taking digital radiographs when requested by a doctor
  • Establishing a trusting relationship with pets and their people
  • Preparing and reading slides under a microscope
  • Restraining and comforting pets during examinations and when staying with us for surgery and/or treatment
  • Administering fluids, medications, insulin, and injections as needed when requested by a doctor or client

It’s no secret that our technicians are a group of highly skilled individuals and an incredibly valuable part of our team. When a patient is required to stay for an emergency, after-hours procedure: a technician is there. If a critical patient arrives and needs immediate attention: a technician is there. During the times when a doctor is unavailable and a client has questions about medications or a procedure: a technician is there.
